Commonly used Operating Systems

The development of the operating system has started since 1950 and different types of operating system have been developed so far by different companies. The most commonly used operating system is

  1. Dos
  2. window
  3. UNIX 
  4. Macintosh


Commonly used Operating Systems

a)  DOS:

DOS stands for Disk Operating System. DOW was the first operating system used for
personal computers. It was developed by Microsoft in 1980. DOS is a single user O.S. It
is a non-graphical command line O.S.

b)  Windows:


Windows operating system is the most commonly used operating system nowadays.
Windows O.S was developed by Microsoft in 1985. Windows is a Graphical user
interface operating system. Windows operating system is more user-friendly. These are
a best operating system running on PCs. It is a less expensive operating system, and
support most of the software.

c)  Mac O.S: 

Mac O.S stands for Macintosh operating system. Mac O.S is the first Graphical user
interface operating system. It was developed by Apple company in 1984 for Apple’s PCs.
Mac. O.S is also a user-friendly O.S and used nowadays in PCs.

d)  UNIX O.S: 

Unix is a multi-tasking and multi-user operating system that was developed by Ken
Thompson, Dennis Ritchie and their group members at Bell lab. in 1969. Unix O.S also
have a graphical user interface which provides an easy to use environment for new users.
